How Much Does It Cost to Charge an Electric Car at Home?
Charging an EV at home costs about 5.5¢ a mile and $664 a year for 12,000 miles — roughly half the fuel cost of a 30 mpg gas car.
Charging an electric car at home costs about 5.5¢ per mile at the US average rate of 18.44¢/kWh — around $664 a year for 12,000 miles, or $55 a month. A 30 mpg gasoline car covering the same distance at $3.20 a gallon costs about $1,280.
That comparison is the whole case, and it holds in most of the country. It stops holding in Hawaii, and it narrows considerably in California — which is why the state you charge in matters more than the car you drive.

Most EVs consume 0.25–0.35 kWh per mile. At 0.30 kWh/mi — a reasonable all-conditions average for a mid-size EV including charging losses:

DC fast charging costs more per mile than gasoline in a 30 mpg car. Public fast charging runs 40–60¢/kWh, three times a typical home rate. An EV that lives on public fast chargers because the driver has no home charging is not saving money on fuel — that is the single most important thing to establish before buying one.
Time-of-use rates change everything
EV charging is the ideal time-of-use load: it is large, it is flexible, and it happens overnight anyway. Most utilities offer an EV or whole-home TOU plan with overnight rates well below the standard rate — often 8–12¢/kWh against 18–30¢.
Every EV and every Level 2 charger can schedule charging. Setting it once is the highest-value five minutes of EV ownership, and in high-rate states the saving is far larger — a California driver on a 55¢ peak / 25¢ off-peak plan who charges at the wrong hour can pay more than the gas car they replaced.

Level 2 is slightly cheaper per mile because less energy is lost as heat over a longer, slower Level 1 charge. That difference alone does not justify the install — around $45 a year. Install Level 2 because Level 1 cannot keep up with a long commute or a cold winter, not to save money.
Many utilities offer rebates of $250–$1,500 toward a Level 2 charger or its installation, usually conditional on enrolling in a TOU or managed-charging plan. Check your utility's site before buying anything — the rebate frequently covers the hardware outright.
Cold weather
Expect 20–40% higher consumption per mile in winter. Battery chemistry is less efficient when cold, cabin heating draws real power, and there is no waste engine heat to use. Preconditioning the car while it is still plugged in moves that energy onto the grid instead of the battery — it does not make it free, but it costs home rates instead of range.
