A standard electric clothes dryer costs about 50¢ per load and roughly $104 a year at the US average rate of 18.44¢/kWh, based on the US average of four loads a week. A heat pump dryer does the same work for about 28¢ a load.
Dryers are one of the few household appliances where the wattage really is the whole story — a heating element either runs or it does not, so there is no duty cycle to argue about. What varies is how long the cycle takes, and that depends far more on your washing machine than on your dryer.

The washing machine line is there to make a point: the motor that tumbles your clothes costs almost nothing. When people say a hot wash is expensive, the cost is not in the washer — it is in the water heater filling it, and it lands on that line of your bill instead.
The cheapest dryer upgrade is a better washer
A dryer's job is removing water. How much water it has to remove is decided before the load ever reaches it.
Mechanical water extraction is enormously cheaper than thermal evaporation. Spinning water out costs a rounding error; boiling it out of a cotton towel costs real money. If your washer has a higher spin option and your clothes tolerate it, using it is free money every single load.
Heat pump dryers: half the energy, twice the time
A conventional vented dryer heats outside air, blows it through the drum, and throws the hot, wet air out of the house. In winter, that also means throwing out air your furnace already paid to heat, and pulling cold replacement air in through every gap in the building.
A heat pump dryer recirculates the same air in a closed loop, condensing the moisture out and reusing the heat. The consequences:
- Roughly half the electricity — about 1.5 kWh per load against 2.7.
- No vent required. This is often the real selling point: it makes a dryer possible in an apartment or an interior closet.
- Cycles run 50–100% longer. A 45-minute load becomes 75–90 minutes.
- Gentler on fabric, because it dries at a much lower temperature.
- You empty a condensate tank or plumb a drain.
At the US average rate the saving is about $46 a year — not enough to justify replacing a working dryer, but a straightforward choice when you are buying anyway, particularly in a high-rate state.

Cutting the cost
- Clean the lint filter every load. Restricted airflow means longer cycles for the same result. This is the single most common cause of a dryer that "stopped working properly".
- Check the outside vent flap. A vent blocked by lint or a bird's nest can add 20–30% to every cycle, and is a genuine fire risk.
- Use the moisture sensor, not a timed cycle. Timed drying overshoots by design — you pick a duration long enough for the worst case, and every load after that is over-dried.
- Dry loads back to back. The drum is already hot, so the second load starts warm.
- Sort by fabric weight. One pair of jeans in with the t-shirts keeps the whole load running until the jeans are dry.
- Line dry the easy things. Sheets and towels are the biggest, wettest, most expensive items to dry and the easiest to hang.
Dryer balls and similar products claim to cut drying time. They do reduce clumping in some loads, which helps marginally, but independent testing has never found the large savings advertised. The lint filter and the vent are where the real money is.
