How Much Does a Refrigerator Cost to Run?

A modern fridge costs about $8 a month to run. A pre-2001 model costs three times that — often more per year than a new one costs to buy.

A modern refrigerator uses roughly 525 kWh a year — about $8 a month or $97 a year at the US average rate of 18.44¢/kWh. A pre-2001 model uses closer to 1,380 kWh, costing about $254 a year.

That gap — around $157 a year — is the reason the old fridge in the garage is one of the few appliances genuinely worth replacing before it breaks.

Refrigerator efficiency standards tightened repeatedly between 1990 and 2014, and the improvement is dramatic — a 2020 fridge uses roughly a third of the electricity of a 1990 one while being larger. If a second fridge holds a case of drinks and some condiments, it is costing more per year than the drinks.

Garages make it worse

A fridge in an unheated garage runs harder in summer because the compressor fights a hotter room, and can malfunction in winter: many models use the freezer compartment's thermostat to trigger cooling, so when the garage drops below about 38°F the compressor stops running and the freezer thaws. Look for a "garage ready" model if the space is unconditioned.

What actually changes the number

Things that matter

  • Age. By far the biggest factor. Nothing you do to a 1995 fridge brings it near a 2020 one.
  • Door seals. Close the door on a dollar bill. If it slides out with no resistance, the gasket has failed and cold air is leaking continuously. Replacement gaskets are $50–$90 and fit most models.
  • Condenser coils. Dust-blanketed coils cannot shed heat, so the compressor runs longer. Vacuuming them once a year is free and recovers 5–10%.
  • Temperature settings. 37–40°F for the fridge, 0°F for the freezer. Colder than that is wasted energy — every degree below spec costs roughly 2–3%.
  • Location. Beside an oven, in direct sun, or with no clearance behind it, the compressor works against a hotter environment.

Things that barely matter

  • How full it is. The "full fridge is more efficient" advice is technically true and practically irrelevant — thermal mass smooths cycling but the effect is a rounding error. A full freezer helps slightly more.
  • How often you open the door. Real, but small: normal household use accounts for around 7% of consumption.
  • Ice makers and water dispensers. Add roughly 10–15%, which is a reason to prefer a model without one but not a reason to replace one you have.

Should you replace it?

Straightforward test. Find the model's annual kWh — it is on the EnergyGuide label, in the manual, or findable by model number — and multiply by your rate. Compare against a new model at roughly 400–500 kWh.

  • Saving under $50 a year: keep it until it fails. A new fridge costs $700–$2,000 and manufacturing it has a real footprint too.
  • Saving $50–$120 a year: replace it when convenient, and check for a utility rebate — many offer $50–$150 for recycling a working second fridge.
  • Saving over $120 a year: replace it now. A payback under six years on an appliance that lasts fifteen is a clear win, and second fridges are usually the ones in this bracket.
